You're Not Too Old. You're Just Out of Practice.

There's a sentence a lot of men start saying somewhere around 40. Most of us never say it out loud. We just live by it.

"That ship has sailed."

The body you had at 25. The energy. The goals you wrote down back when you thought you had all the time in the world. Somewhere along the way you quietly decided that version of you is gone, and the best you can do now is hold the line and not get worse.

I want to push back on that, because I don't think it's true. I think most men over 40 aren't too old to change. They're out of practice.

What "out of practice" really means

Think about the last time you picked up something you used to be good at.

Maybe you threw a football with your son in the yard for the first time in years. The first few throws were ugly. Your arm felt like it belonged to somebody else. But by the tenth throw something came back. Not all of it. Enough that you remembered.

That's what out of practice feels like. It's not that the ability left. It's that you stopped taking reps.

Keeping promises to yourself works the same way. When you were younger you probably did hard things on a schedule because somebody made you. A coach. A drill sergeant. A boss. A bill that was due. Somebody else was holding the standard, and you met it.

Then life got full. Work, marriage, kids, a mortgage. You got really good at keeping promises to everybody else. And without anybody noticing, you stopped keeping the ones you made to yourself.

That's not a character flaw. It's a skill you haven't used in a while.

Why it feels harder than it is

Here's what makes it rough. When you're out of practice, the first few days feel terrible, and your brain reads that as proof.

You get up early once and you're dragging by lunch. "See, I'm not built for this anymore."

You eat right for three days and the scale doesn't move. "Told you. My metabolism's shot."

You miss one workout and the old voice shows up. "Same as always. Why bother."

None of that is proof you're too old. It's just what the first ugly throws feel like. Every man who's ever gotten back into shape, back into his marriage, back into his faith, or back into his own life has felt exactly that. The difference is he kept throwing.

How to get your reps back

You don't need a 90-day overhaul. You need reps you can actually win. Here's where I'd start.

Pick one promise. Just one. Not a whole new lifestyle. Something small enough that you could do it on your worst day. Ten minutes of walking. In bed by 10:30. One glass of water before coffee.

Keep it for seven days straight. Write it down every night. Did it or didn't. No commentary, no excuses in the margins.

When you miss, start the next morning. Not next Monday. Not the first of the month. The next morning. Men over 40 waste a lot of time waiting for a clean start. You don't get one. You get tomorrow.

Then add one more. After a week you've got proof. Seven times you said you'd do something and did it. That's when you stack the next promise on top.

It'll feel too small at first. That's the point. You're not trying to impress anybody. You're rebuilding trust with the one man you can't get away from.

You've got more in you than you think

I work with men who already know what to do. They're not lazy and they're not broken. They've just been carrying everybody else for so long that they forgot what it feels like to carry themselves.

The good news is the man you used to be didn't disappear. He's just waiting on you to start taking reps again. And the man you could be at 45, 50, 60 is built the exact same way. One kept promise at a time.

So here's my question for you. What's the one thing you told yourself you were too old for? Write it down. Then go throw the ball again.
